I thought I would post a few random items today. Sometimes I hold out on some things in the hope that I will think of something brilliant to say. Needless to say I frequently don’t. To ensure that you don’t miss out some cool stuff I decided to pool some of the quirkier ones together and talk about them that way. Pretty clever right? … pssst… you’re supposed to agree here.
So hands up who likes the Planet of the Apes? OK, let me clarify, who likes the original movie and not the silly remake? Oh, still not sure? Who likes the first of the original movies? Finally everyone has their hands up, excellent.
Here are some very special items from the original movie franchise.
First up, check this out.
Stunning right? Released by Knickerbocker in the early 70s this is the 9″ Simple Simian Doll. If you ask me it looks like something you would get if Dr. Zaius and Richard Simmons had a love that no one dare mention and it resulted in a secret love child.
To tell you the truth I am not 100% certain that it is an official licensed product or not. What I can tell you is that it is listed in my Planet of the Apes Collectibles guide book so let’s just say that it is. What adds another level of certainty for me is that the Knickerbocker company held numerous product licenses over the years including Disney and Marvel to just name a couple. That being the case it seems likely that they coughed up the money to be legit.
This toy is rare, so expect to drop at least $100 to get one.
Next up is something that is in my opinion a little cooler as well as being a little more financially reasonable.
Made in the 70s by Ideal, the same company that brought us all of those cool Evel Knievel toys from our childhood.
At 19″ tall these inflatables are just too cool. You may remember that I have a bit of a thing for unusual blow-up items and I have already served up monsters as well as an alien that are both well worth revisiting… jeez am I good or what?
As you can see they made Galen as well as General Urko.
And surprise surprise they also made a Dr. Zaius to round out the set.
If you look around you can typically find these for about $40-50 each. Be careful though to make sure that not only do the figures inflate, but that they stay inflated… at least for a reasonable amount of time. Once these guys have a leak there is no fixing them. Also make sure they have their jackets as these are removeable.
Last up is probably the most bizarre Planet of the Apes related collectible ever.
These are called Play Feet and were released by Commonwealth in 1974. I am not sure what else to say here as the toys themselves are just so darn weird.
Here are some old commercials for the more mainstream Mego toys for Planet of the Apes.
See you next time.

Apes! I love the apes! The feet are really strange. From the drawing of the 3 apes they used it looks like this was released around the time of the final movie as it matches the characters from that film. No Chuck Heston though. Too bad.
That’s some good stuff! I have always loved the apes movies but unfortunately Elise thinks the make-up is creepy so I don’t get to watch them much. *sigh*
You are welcome over here any time The Goog for an ape marathon. All 5 movies. 10 hours of apes!
my favorite christmas was when I got the planet of the ape tree house and the lost city playset
