DC comics has one of the most commercially exploited empires of all time. Batman and Superman hit human consciousnesses back in the late thirties and since then things have just exploded. Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Justice League, Catwoman and Penguin… who doesn’t know these characters?
Out of the million and one collectibles that have been produced there are a number of gems that have been produced as well as more than their fair share of duds. Today’s post is one that for me falls somewhere in the middle, not great but definitely very interesting. In a world with so few new ideas I will take interesting any day.
Check this out.
The tagline is “vinyl with an edge” and these Blox figures certainly have that, in the literal sense of the word that is.
I will say for the record that the days of vinyl being the material of cutting edge designer toys is done as far as I am concerned. The crest of that wave, and I mean in the new and cool sense, hit say five years ago. Sure a bunch of the stuff being made today is fun but at this point most of it is just mass produced and no longer a unique vehicle for small scale producers to get their visions out there. It is a shame because non mainstream designers still have creations they want to loose on the world but now they are over shadowed by the usual suspects of the mega corps.
Rant, rant, rant!
Deep breath, move on.
At about 7″ tall this is yet another interesting piece to emerge from Funko. Yep, somehow someone has managed yet again to reimagine the Dark Knight.
Looking almost as though he were made out of Lego blocks you can see how the line got its name… you can also see the “edge” that they were referring to earlier.
Batman is accompanied in this first wave by a predictable villain, the Joker.
I so want to love these guys but I can’t. Just like I said before, interesting - YES, rising above the rest of the product out there and being awesome - unfortunately NO.
The back of the box shows that there are at least two more pieces, in the form of Green Lantern and Superman (zzzzz), on their way. My prediction is that there will be several more beyond that… sometimes the predictability of this hobby saddens me. Oh, and let me guess, there will also be some from Star Wars, and Disney, and… and…
At $15 a piece the price is reasonable and for the hardcore fan I say grab one, for the rest of you I would take the chance that they might end up on clearance somewhere. At a couple of bucks each how can you go wrong?

Definitely funky, but ultimately just more shit to collect dust on a shelf.
Different, which is good, but it ultimately comes down to how many different versions of one character do you need? I second what The Goog said.
I don’t know if we are the target demographic here. This seems to have a real hipster quality.
I suppose the kids who played with batman toys in the early 90’s are now in the workforce and want to recapture some of their childhood, not unlike me with star wars.
reminds me of that ice cream with bubble gum eyeballs http://www.66batman.com/yabbfiles/Attachments/MVC-229F.JPG
